Exploring and Protecting Seabird Life in the Azores
What is Procellar-ID?
Procellar-ID is a project dedicated to exploring seabird diversity across the Azores archipelago. Our goal is to establish a regional collaborative network to monitor the occurrence of these species at sea. We work in partnership with marine tourism companies with decades of experience dedicated to the exploration of the archipelago’s natural heritage.

Located in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, the Azores archipelago is a vital hotspot for marine biodiversity, including seabirds. The region hosts 10 breeding species, most of them Procellariiformes, which also use its productive waters as feeding grounds. In addition, there is a high diversity of non-breeding species that visit the archipelago during their migration periods or over winter.

In the Azores, most research and conservation efforts on these species have been focused primarily on nesting colonies. Therefore, Procellar-ID aims to fill the gap in seabird data collected at sea, while also focusing on rare breeding species and migratory species that have received little to no dedicated monitoring effort in the region.
