Procellar-ID is a collaborative platform for monitoring seabirds in the waters around the Azores, focusing on both the most abundant and the rarest species. Our methodology involves maritime tourism companies and their staff, who are driven by a strong passion for nature. Together, we are gradually uncovering the hidden life of seabirds from the heart of the North Atlantic.

Mateo
Our team
The platform was founded in São Miguel Island by two friends: Mateo Aleixos and Marc Tolosa. Mateo is an environmental scientist and ornithologist from Tavernes de la Valldigna (València), who became passionate about birds at the age of eight and now focuses on seabird identification and data collection at sea. Marc, from Barcelona, is a biologist and naturalist with a strong interest in ecological data analysis and modelling, and has experience working with opportunistic cetacean occurrence data.
Angel
Valeria
Valeria Idárraga, who became a member of Procellar-ID in early 2025, is an environmental scientist from Colombia with an MSc in marine conservation and a background working in data science and long term databases in different research projects. The team has been involved as whale-watching guides on São Miguel island, Marc, since 2022, and Mateo and Valeria since 2024. The platform also relies on the work of designer and web developer Ángel Santos. Originally from València, Ángel is responsible for giving the project its digital structure and facilitating access to the collected information. His contribution has been essential to the growth and visibility of Procellar-ID.
Our aim
- To establish a long-term seabird occurrence database to support research, conservation, management and education.
- To study seabird ecology and distribution in the Azores.
- To engage the local community in seabird research and conservation.
- To reaffirm the great value of collaborative science and opportunistic data platforms.
Nuestra metodología:
Censos visuales
Utilizamos una metodología basada en la observación directa de aves marinas desde embarcaciones o puntos estratégicos. Mediante censos visuales, registramos las especies avistadas, sus comportamientos y ubicaciones, lo que nos permite analizar su distribución y hábitos, así como identificar áreas clave para su conservación en las Azores.
